Boston Basement Rehab: Demo Time

sortin.jpgOur demo team from D&F Services has done a great job moving along in this phase of the basement rehab. Prior to demolition, the plumbing (water & gas) was capped and the fixtures removed. There was a 1/2 bath, gas stove (with no venting) and laundry. Any live water or gas pipes were painted orange to call attention to them. All the electrical fixtures were removed including overhead flourescent lighting and temporary lighting was put in place.

sortin2.jpgA good demo contractor, like ours, will leave any supporting studs in place to hold up water meters, electrical equipment, etc. In this basement the water main and meter were attached to an exterior partition. If somebody had just started yanking, the basement would’ve been filled with water by the time the city came to shut it off.

The home remains occupied upstairs and loss of utilities would be a disaster. Chris from D&F knows how to work around all these obstacles and get the job done.

We stay out of his way but check in to deal with issues around electrical and plumbing equipment that may be unsafe. Material is sorted for recycling and to maximize the space in the trucks to cut down on transport. And the jobsite is cleaned constantly. Next up, Mr. X (one of SBK’s best kept secrets) will get to work on the electrical to bring the service into this century.

We’ll also be getting the photo album up here soon at Greener Redux so you can see the progress in pictures. Our starting point on this project was pretty challenging as you can see here, and their were some pretty interesting surprises during demolition so we’ll definitely let you know when the photo album is ready.
