Sleek, Sustainable, Recycled: Eleek Fixtures Making a Splash

Eleek is making quite a splash these days with their sustainable and stylish fixtures, finishes and lighting. The company has integrated sustainability into their business by using renewable energy, local sourcing and recycled materials. Case in point, the Zazen sink pictured above.
This piece is beautiful and versatile - it can be top-mounted or under countertop. It’s made from 100% recycled cast aluminum (locally sourced) and 90% recycled cast bronze. But Eleek’s sustainability goes well beyond materials and into manufacturing and overall mindset.
Eleek uses the principles and framework of The Natural Step Network to define sustainability goals and measure progress. The company’s shop and office run on 100% habitat-safe green electricity from Pacific Power. Recycled paper and soy-based inks are office stock.
On the manufacturing side, Eleek uses discarded lumber, salvage wood and reusable silicon for mold and pattern work. Finishing touches are handled by reusable abrasive media and re-circulated water.
Packaging is streamlined and the company will take back shipping containers and pallets. The company sources 80% of supplies from within 50 miles of the shop. And, Eleek will take back any product it makes for reuse or recycling.
The full list of sustainable measures is impressive (see it online) and the company is getting some well-deserved recognition for its efforts. Most recent, Eleek Takashima Sconce Wins Honorable Mention for Sustainability in the Lighting for Tomorrow Competition, 2007 and Eleek Waterbox Sink Won Top Ten Green Building Products 2007 from Sustainable Industries in July.
