While to many the term historic preservation conjures up images of drafty, energy inefficient dwellings, renovation of old buildings can maintain the principles of 3R living: reduce, reuse and recycle. Preservation and green building have many common goals such as material reuse and creating a long, purposeful life cycle. Preservation is about sustainability.

Boston Basement Rehab: Moving Along With Plaster, Tile & Cabinets

Our inspections are all done so the Darosa Brothers from New Bedford moved in in full force to hang gypsum plaster board and plaster all the walls and ceilings. They also repaired and blended an existing curved ceiling in the stairwell.

Making It Go Round: Recycled House Parts

This Old House’s Jordan Novet has put together a great list of “house part thrift stores” bringing to light the thriving second life of unused construction materials, and where to find them. Many of our favorite stomps made the list, like Build It Green! NYC and the Building Materials Resource Center Building Materials Resource Center, where you’ll find donations from Scott’s company SBK Unlimited.

Boston Basement Rehab: Roughing it

bbrri.jpgWe’ve framed up the new stud walls in the basement. A pressure treated sole plate is used where the walls site on the slab to prevent any future insect or rot problems. The heat pipes will remain exposed, but I want to leave as little exposed mechanicals above as possible so we built soffits over various pipes. When doing this it is very important to leave access to any valves, junction boxes, etc.
